“Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw Him they worshiped Him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” -Matthew 28:16-20 [ESV]
Sometimes I think we miss out on the gravity of these words. We go straight to the charge from Jesus to “Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations…” We instead need to greatly understand the gravity of these words. These words are what really charges up the calling and the cause that was given to us by Jesus. Why?
- It reminds us of WHO Jesus really is…If He has ALL Authority in Heaven and Earth…that makes Him a pretty BIG HONKIN’ DEAL. It is crazy that we sometimes relate Jesus in the corner of our minds as a weakfish, quiet fellow in a bath robe (sorry to generalize here) but this is simply false. Jesus was the most virtuous person to every walk this earth…BUT (and this is a really BIG BUT!) He was God in the flesh. God Himself was made visible as Jesus Christ. He was, is, and will always be God (Hebrews 13:8, Revelation 22:13)
- It reminds us of who we really are… and this is such a dismantling of our claim to self. We are not God. Let me repeat that is type. We Are Not God! Although we are selfish and rebellious and try to get things our way most of the time (Don’t think this is true, think about the ads that try to sell to you…how do they entice us…”Get it your way.) When we see the crazy awesome BIGNESS of God as Jesus Christ, our sense of self is dismantled. We get wrecked. We are undone…and this is a good thing. It helps us to understand why we need the Gospel. Why we need to repent of our sins and follow Jesus Christ, the only author of salvation. It dismantles us and shows us why we need to walk with God. It brings an awesome newness to what worship really is.
- It reminds us that this BIG AWESOME GOD… gives us his grace to be ours. He gives us His name to carry with us. If we are disciples of God, we walk around with his badge of honor across our chest. We get to embrace really and truthfully who we were created to be… Men and Women of God that follow their King.
Why should we ever be afraid? Why should we ever be ashamed? We have Jesus Christ… the Authority of all Heaven and all Earth. Let us follow Him boldly! Dismantle your claim to self. Embrace His Identity…and as He changes your world…He will call you to His great cause!
By His Grace. Through His Gospel. For His Glory.
